Classic Movie Favorites Index

Classic Movie Favorites Index! If you own an Apple computer and wish a display that shares your computer's design, you should only have two very similar options, info is Apple's 27" Thunderbolt display. At a cost of $999, it isn't exactly a cheap option. Does it justify your money?

Apple's new 27-Inch Thunderbolt display is, for the most part, not really a new display. It is much the same as the older 27" LED Cinema Display, except it now includes Apple's Thunderbolt technology.

Still, which could not be a trival new feature. After all, the press announcements say Thunderbolt may be the coolest connection ever invented, so perhaps this device is worth a good look.

Apple's new Thunderbolt display may well not offer a lot when it comes to new display panel technology, but that does not mean it is behind the changing times or with a lack of quality. Besides simply being big, it offers everything that most users might want. LED backlighting provides for more precise lighting control, lower energy use, and much better black level reproduction. Meanwhile, IPS display technology allows for vivid colors and wide viewing angles. And just to incorporate some extra sprinkes of awesome, the resolution is 2560x1440.

Though Apple has dropped the "Cinema Display" brand from this new service, it could still apply. This is a monitor that is certainly geared towards the enjoyment of multimedia content like movies, photos or even video games. The use of high-gloss glass instead of a matte surface is evidence of that. It leads to more glare, and also drastically increases contrast. Images have the symptoms of real "pop" and do not suffer from grainy details if viewed closely.

There are monitors that, as outlined by technical measurements, provide more accurate colors. Few, however, can match the subjective brilliance of the display.

Monitors usually are not required to provide a lot of extra ports if they're cheap, but as the price rises beyond several hundred dollars, extra connections become expected. Apple features a reputation for poor connectivity in comparison to similarly priced competitors, and while the Thunderbolt display does buck the trend somewhat, it could be better.

The main connectivity feature, the Thunderbolt port, is within effect simply Mini DisplayPort. Thunderbolt's more attractive feature is its bandwidth, but which doesn't offer any advantage here. It's also possible to daisy-chain multiple Thunderbolt devices using a single port, but because of the lack of compatible devices currently on the market, it is difficult to imagine this advantage being popular. The only common application I can consider is daisy-chaining two displays with a single MacBook Pro, that is said to be possible (I have not tested it personally).

You'll also receive 3 USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 800 port, and an Ethernet port. These ports can behave as extensions from the connected Mac, which is handy sometimes. MacBook Airs, for example, lack Ethernet available even as an option, but can use an Ethernet connection via this display.

What's lacking is, of course, HDMI and DVI. The not enough USB 3.0 ports is another downer, though many competitors have not yet offer USB 3.0 as well. The connections on the Thunderbolt display makes sense if you are connecting it with a Mac, in case you aren't, it will seem rather limited.

The speakers with this display really are a 2.1 system which gives reasonably adequate sound. However, like every single built-in monitor speakers ever made, the deficiency of proper sound staging limits enjoyment. Many external speaker options under $100 can provide better sound quality, and you'll want to purchase a real solution until you almost never listen to music, watch movies or play games. If you don't watch free movies online or play games though, you most likely wouldn't be buying this monitor.

To enable FaceTime, a microphone and a webcam are included. The webcam quality is much better than most built-in monitor webcams and in many cases many inexpensive stand-alone webcams. Microphone quality is adequate for FaceTime and web calls, but isn't a sensible choice for recording a podcast.

Although the display's large stand is stable and stylish, it only tilts slightly, and there is no height, swivel or pivot adjustment. For some users, this is going to be something useful, and almost all other monitors priced above $400 offer these traits. This is one instance where Apple's resolve for simple design seriously limits a product or service.

There's no question how the Thunderbolt display, like the previous 27" LED Cinema Display, offers a top-notch viewing experience. Apple have not skimped on display technology, and even though the glossy glass panel might be annoying in bright rooms, it provides jaw-dropping visuals in more ideal lighting.

It's a waste, then, that this display is average by some other measure. Limited connectivity and a insufficient ergnomic adjustments are major dings against any monitor priced above $400, nevermind built to be just a buck shy of $1000. If you wait for a sale, you can actually grab a 30-Inch Dell Ultrasharp for the same dough.

Given the indegent value, it's impossible to rate the product as anything superior to average regardless of the excellent image quality. The main reason to acquire this display isn't because it's the top value but instead because you own a Mac already, and you want to stay within the confines of Apple's ecosystem.
